The St. Regis Mauritius Resort

MAURITIUS: Located some 1200 miles off the southeast coast of Africa, the island of Mauritius is known for its beaches, lagoons and reefs. In many ways it’s Europe’s answer to the Hawaiian islands when you compare the beautiful tropical weather that makes it ideal for both relaxing and fun activities like golf, snorkeling, surfing, dolphin watching and long walks on the beach. And, yes, plenty of unforgettable sunsets too.

VIBE: There are certain hotel groups I have come to trust for family travels and St. Regis Hotel & Resorts is always at the top of my list. Our last trip to St .Regis Vommuli in the Maldives went above all expectations, but where a little atoll in the Indian Ocean that’s only accessible by a sea plane can feel secluded, the St.Regis Le Morne’s expansive beachfront made for a more family resort vibe.

St. Regis Mauritius | Manor House Room

ROOMS: If I am to be frank … the rooms could use an update. When booking choose the Manor House rooms above the pool for the more luxurious feel as those have been updated to the top of the line St. Regis standards and although your room is not directly on the beach you can spend your whole day with your feet in the sand as it’s a short walk past the resort’s chic main pool.

REEFS: You’ll definitely want to pack Aqua socks for the whole family as the beach sand is rough with the sea being on a coral reef. You’ll also want to bring snorkel gear. The reef lines the resort’s coast meaning you can just walk into the salty water, plop you face underwater and see vibrant reefs alive with colorful fish.

POOLS & ACTIVITIES: My children aged 10 and 8 said the resort often recalled their favorite Disney movies — one being ‘Finding Nemo’ with the reef fish at your toes, and the other being ‘Moana’ thanks to the lush-green basalt peak that towers over the resort that could’ve inspired the backdrop for the movie, and also gives the resort its name. The Kids Club had plenty of activities with pizza making, kite flying, henna tattoos, football (soccer) on the beach, however my kids just wanted to just stay at the pool all day as it was the perfect temperature and big!  With all of our travels to the Maldives last year, the pools on those islands are quite small, as the ocean all around you is crystal blue and shallow. I forgot how fun a big hotel pool, full of kids is for Gigi and Truman. Whereas, on other trips they would be constantly telling me they’re bored, on this trip I heard none of that, thanks to the pool!

FAMILY DETAILS: The hotel offers family portrait services at sunset, which I took advantage of as I saw some of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen.

CAN’T MISS EXPERIENCE: Another excursion you won’t want to miss out on is swimming with dolphins in the wild, which the hotel arranged for us. This was a first for me and one of the most spectacular experiences ever with the boat scaling the tide and finding schools of dolphins that would glide past you as you swam alongside them in their natural habitat.

DRESS CODE & DINING: We didn’t leave the property much except for dinners at Wapalapam (a must visit for delicious local food); and then a delicious Asian fusion dinner at another resort. The dress code for dinner at the hotel is long pants for men at every restaurant, a resort standard. Kids are OK in nice dress shorts. I swapped between long linen and silk dresses by Kalita and Jaline Resort most evenings, and from all the places to eat inside the resort Atsuko, the resort’s sushi restaurant was our favorite.

The St. Regis has solidified its place for me as a reliable, trusted hotel group for our family travels. Vommuli will always be my number 1, for rest and relaxation, I’d highly recommend St. Regis Le Morne for a family vacation for its activities, unique beaches, and one of a kind experiences.
